Auto Repair Troubleshooting Charts - Steering System
Get ideas about what your auto is needing to run it's best



Problem Possible Cause Remedy/Repair
Hard Steering (steering wheel is hard to turn)
  1. Low or uneven tire pressure
  2. Loose power steering pump drive belt
  3. Low or incorrect power steering fluid
  4. Incorrect front end alignment
  5. Defective power steering pump
  6. Bent or poorly lubricated front end parts
  1. Inflate tires to correct pressure
  2. Adjust belt
  3. Add fluid as necessary
  4. Have front end alignment checked /adjusted
  5. Have pump checked /repaired
  6. Lubricate and/or have defective parts replaced
Loose Steering (too much play in the steering wheel
  1. Loose wheel bearings
  2. Loose or worn steering linkage
  3. Faulty shocks
  4. Worn ball joints
  1. Adjust wheel bearings
  2. Have worn parts serviced
  3. Replace shocks
  4. Have ball joints checked /serviced
Car Veers or Wanders (car pulls to one side with hands off the steering wheel)
  1. Incorrect tire pressure
  2. Improper front end., alignment
  3. Loose wheel bearings
  4. Loose or bent front end components
  5. Faulty shocks
  1. Inflate tires to correct pressure
  2. Have front end alignment checked /adjusted
  3. Adjust wheel bearings
  4. Have worn components checked /serviced
  5. Replace shocks
Wheel oscillation or vibration transmitted through steering wheel
  1. Improper tire pressures
  2. Tires out of balanceLoose wheel bearings
  3. Improper front end alignment
  4. Worn or bent front end components
  1. Inflate tires to correct pressure
  2. Have tires balanced
  3. Adjust wheel bearings
  4. Have front end alignment checked /adjusted
  5. Have front end checked /serviced
Uneven tire wear (see Section 26-Tires)
  1. Incorrect tire pressure
  2. Front end out of alignment
  3. Tires out of balance
  1. Inflate tires to correct pressure
  2. Have front end alignment checked /adjusted
  3. Have tires balanced
